Lisbon, with its rich history, vibrant culture and charming old-world charm, is a haven for lovers of vintage textiles. Whether you are a designer, collector or simply an admirer of beautifully woven fabrics, the Portuguese capital offers a fascinating journey into the past through its antique and second-hand textile markets, specialty stores and hidden gems. Katie, Head of Comms at Chloe Jonason Interiors is based in Lisbon and here are her favourite places to discover ‘all things vintage’ in this amazing city:
1. Feira da Ladra – The Thieves’ Market
No search for vintage treasures in Lisbon would be complete without a visit to Feira da Ladra. This historic flea market, held every Tuesday and Saturday in the Alfama district, is one of the best places to hunt for unique textiles. You’ll find stalls filled with embroidered linens, antique lace and even old-fashioned Portuguese tapestries. Haggling is part of the experience, so don’t be afraid to negotiate for that special piece.
2. Retrosaria Bijou
Located in the heart of Lisbon, Retrosaria Bijou is a paradise for textile lovers. This small but well-curated shop specializes in vintage and traditional Portuguese fabrics, including beautifully crafted chita prints, delicate lace and handcrafted woolen textiles. It’s an excellent stop for those looking for authentic pieces that reflect Portugal’s textile heritage.
3. A Vida Portuguesa
A Vida Portuguesa is a must-visit for anyone interested in traditional Portuguese craftsmanship. While not strictly a vintage store, it offers a stunning collection of textile goods that celebrate the country’s history. Look out for traditional Portuguese towels, handwoven blankets and embroidered napkins that echo the beauty of bygone eras.
4. Armazém das Malhas
For those with a keen eye for vintage fashion textiles, Armazém das Malhas is a fantastic spot. This warehouse-like store specializes in deadstock fabrics, retro prints and old-fashioned woolens. Whether you’re looking for something to sew a new garment or a rare textile to add to your collection, this place is worth exploring.
5. Antique Shops
Lisbon is dotted with charming antique stores that often have hidden textile treasures. Areas like Chiado and Bairro Alto have a number of vintage and antique shops where you can find embroidered handkerchiefs, lace trims and even antique quilts.
Feira de Belém is an antiques and crafts fair near Jerónimos Monastery, held on the first and third Sunday of each month, perfect for exploring between sightseeing.
6. Portuguese Tiles
Lisbon is famous for its stunning azulejos (traditional Portuguese tiles) and there are plenty of places where you can find authentic, hand-painted tiles. One of the oldest tile manufacturers in Lisbon, Fábrica Sant’Anna has been making hand-painted tiles since 1741. They offer beautifully crafted traditional tiles, custom designs and even tile-making workshops.
I really recommend visiting the Museu Nacional do Azulejo (Tile Museum). The museum showcases the history of azulejos in Portugal and features breathtaking tile panels from different eras, plus there is a beautiful garden in the middle - I love taking visitors here.
Refreshments
After all this shopping and climbing up and down the hills in Lisbon, you will be in need of some light refreshment! My favourite places to stop off are the various ‘Quiosques’ that you find in most parks/squares in Lisbon - they are great places to order an ‘imperial’ (a fresh 20cl beer), take a seat and watch the world go by. Here are some of my favourites:
Jardim D’Estrela: Quiosque Gengibre da Estrela
Chiado: Quiosque do Carmo
Principe Real: Quiosque Lisboa
Amoreiras: Quiosque das Amoreiras
Tips for Vintage Treasure Hunting in Lisbon:
- Bring cash – Some flea markets and smaller stores may not accept cards.
- Inspect fabrics carefully – Check for wear, stains, or moth damage before purchasing.
- Ask about the fabric’s history – Many sellers have fascinating stories about where the textiles come from.
- Be patient – The best finds often come to those who are willing to dig through piles and explore different locations.
Lisbon’s vintage textile scene is a rewarding world to explore, offering a chance to connect with Portugal’s rich textile heritage. Whether you’re seeking inspiration for your next project or simply wish to own a piece of history, the city’s markets, shops and hidden corners promise a textile treasure trove waiting to be discovered.
